In your 20s, it’s easy to feel invincible — you’re young, you’re healthy and there’s so much life ahead of you. Why worry about your health now, when you’re in your prime?But neglecting to take care of yourself during your 20s can negatively impact your health later on in life, because the habits you start in your 20s are likely to be the ones that you stick to for decades to come. By starting these habits now, you can put yourself in a good place to stay healthy for a long time. So here are the top 5 habits to develop in your 20s.

1.Establish healthy sleep habits

Healthy sleep is important for both physical and mental health. By getting at least seven hours of sleep a night, you can optimize your health, improve your immune system and sharpen your cognition. What I mean by this is avoiding stimulants like caffeine near bedtime, exercising regularly, not eating after dinner time, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and keeping your bedroom dark and quiet.

By establishing these sleep habits early in life, it’ll be easier for you to stick to a healthy sleep routine later in life, when work, family and other needs tend to make our lives busier.

2. Exercise regularly

Create a realistic goal for yourself to stay active. Join a local group where you can exercise with others who share your goals, join a gym and start a workout routine, or simply take a walk down the street. Increasing your physical activity has been proven to sharpen your mind as you age. Mix in both anaerobic activities such as weight lifting with aerobic activity such as jogging or biking for optimal results.

If you start making regular exercise a habit in your 20s, it’ll help you stay healthy, both physically and mentally, as you age.

3.Begin to determine what is important to you

Ask yourself the big questions now, so that while you might not figure out the answers until years later, you know at least which answers you ought to look for. And that way, when you find them as you go through your life, you’ll treasure them all the more.

4.Make a list of places you want to visit and the things you want to do

It’s the vision board principle — collecting your thoughts in one place, and keeping them in a place that you can either see or access easily (Pinterest, anyone?) turns it from just an idea to something you can potentially act on. Saying you want to visit some great place in some far corner of the world or saying you have that dream of you becoming someone or doing or having something is all well and good, but it’s just talk until you put your words into a plan. Write down those dreams. Make them real.

5.Begin to put money toward something that will benefit you long-term.

Whether that’s your very own house and the land to go with it, the kind of car that is going to last you for years, or even shoes that are going to last through their investment rather than their $30 knock-off, begin investing in things that will actually get you more bang for your buck.
