Marrakech Travel Guide

Marrakech…my go-to city that I have to visit every time I need a break. I love Marrakesh. In fact, I visit Marrakesh once a year, it’s becoming a ritual to me. And this year, I went back again to The Red City for just 4 days and I still feel like I need to come back to experience even more of it. LOL cuz I never get enough of it. Anyway, so Marrakesh is a place that most of travelers love. But it’s also one of these places where you need to adjust your expectations accordingly and be prepared that it’s a place like no other. That’s why I thought why not write for you guys a Marrakech Travel Guide where you’ll find all of the things you can do in this beautiful city. I hope you’ll fall in love with the city as much as I did.

Welcome to your Marrakech Travel Guide

Where to stay

Dar Al Hamra

If you want to experience the real Marrakech experience, you should definitely go to a Riad. And there is no better place such as Dar Al Hamra. The hotel is very charming and well located. I had a very nice and clean room, and the staff’s hospitality was at a very high standard. I was welcomed with tea and cookies. I really enjoyed my stay there so I highly recommend it to you!

Where to go

YSL Museum

The most famous fashion designer of all time, Yves Saint Laurent, spent his time in Marrakech so much that he chose it as his second home since he travelled there for the first time in 1966 and was reminded of the lost paradise of his childhood: The Algerian Port City of orc. Many of his creations were inspired by the North African culture. A museum dedicated to it shows how strong the “Red City” shaped the Parisian designer, with the most beautiful haute couture creations.

Jardin Majorelle

Jardin Majorelle is one of the most famous and popular attractions in Marrakech, and it was one of my favorite parts of my Morocco itinerary. Designed by the French Orientalist artist Jacques Majorelle the garden is characterized by colorful blue walls, a wide variety of plants and a tranquil atmosphere that attract tourists from all over the world. Construction of Jardin Majorelle started in 1923 and took almost 40 years. In the 1980s famous fashion designers Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé purchased the property. Today it’s also the home of the Islamic Art Museum, the Berber Museum and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. If you can get there early in the morning when there aren’t too many people there you will have a lovely and peaceful experience wandering around the colorful gardens.

Get lost in the souks

One of the most iconic things you can do in Marrakech is to get lost in the souks. A souk is an Arab marketplace. The souks of Marrakech are the largest in Morocco, and the perfect place to go shopping for your travel souvenirs. You can find the souks in Marrakech everywhere along the little streets of the Medina; the walled old town. As soon as you step in the Medina you will find yourself lost amongst the winding little streets, don’t try to resist it, embrace getting lost amongst the shops and you’ll find the most interesting souks in Marrakech.

SEE THE KOUTOUBIA MOSQUE AND MINARET

The minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque is one of Marrakech’s most famous icons. Although it only sits at 77 meters high, you can see it from near and far. It is still an active place of worship and non-Muslims cannot enter, but you can admire it from the outside.

Go to Jemaa El Fna square at night

This is one of the best-known squares in Africa and definitely something you picture when thinking of Marrakech. During the day it’s filled with buskers, orange juice stands, and shops, and in the evening it transforms into a huge outdoor food court. Be sure to try all the local delicacies like tagine, cous-cous, kebabs, snail, sheep’s head, and pigeon pie. Jemaa El Fna turns into a huge food market every night so that’s a great place to get a bit of everything.
