There are a lot of types of sunscreens, from chemical sunscreens to physical sunscreens (formerly known as Sunblock), from organic sunscreens to homemade sunscreens. However, the most used ones are the chemical sunscreens. Unfortunately, these sun screens use chemicals such as oxybenzone that can actually disrupt the hormone system, affect metabolism, cause allergic skin reactions, exacerbate rosacea, clog pores and even increase the risk of endometriosis among other issues. They can also trigger pigmentation (freckles and spots). So you should start considering using natural homemade sunscreens. They may not have the lab testing that conventional ones do, but they certainly don’t contain those chemicals that can be harmful and dangerous on your skin. So now, do you want to know how to make your own sunscreen at home, using natural ingredients in just 5 minutes? Then keep on reading!
There’s a variety of natural organic oils that can provide you good sun protection and other ingredients that contain a natural SPF (sun protection factor) in them. Try to buy 100% organic oils because they are amazing for moisturizing, soothing skin, and providing antioxidants.
Coconut Oil – Has a natural SPF between 4 and 6 which is not enough, I know. Coconut oil alone provides minimal defense but if you mix it with other natural ingredients that have SPF, it would be enough protection.
Almond oil – It has a SPF around 5. Not enough! But, again, if it was mixed with other natural ingredients that have SPF, it would be enough protection.
Red Raspberry Seed Oil – This oil has high SPF (over 30) which is awesome. Plus, who does not love raspberries.
Carrot seed oil – This oil has the highest SPF among all these oils listed her (over 40). Quite surprising, isn’t it?
Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide – It contain a natural SPF between 2 and 20, it just depends on how much is used.
Do you want to make your own sunscreen at home? Let’s dive into the recipe now:
You will need ½ cup almond or olive oil, ¼ cup coconut oil, ¼ cup beeswax, 2 tablespoons of zinc oxide, one tablespoon of red raspberry seed oil, one tablespoon of carrot seed oil and 2 tablespoons of shea butter.
Now that you have all your recipes ready, take all the ingredients except zinc oxide and put them in a jar. Then place on the stove a saucepan filled with water and put the jar in the saucepan (bain-marie). Mix the ingredients in the jar occasionally, and once they are all completely melted, stir in the zinc oxide. Stir a few times as it cools to make sure zinc oxide is incorporated. Then store the jar in the refrigerator for an hour.
And there you have it, a simple recipe to make your own sunscreen at home.
