NYFW: The Best Runway Looks at New York Fashion Week Spring 2020

This is the first time I’m writing about NYFW New York Fashion Week! It is said that it is the busiest week of the year, WOAW Anyway, I tried in this post to track the standout looks from this week’s top collections. From the emerging trends to the standout pieces, I’m spotlighting the top 5 runway looks at New York Fashion Week (NYFW). Consider it your ultimate sneak peek at the season ahead.

Here are the top 5 Best Runway Looks at NYFW Spring 2020

Dion Lee

During a season of bright colors and prints, Dion Lee found beauty in a clean slate. In a collection of neutrals, defined by crisp white shirting and classic wardrobe pieces, it was the details that really made a mark. Utility bralettes worn both over dresses and solo made for a cool way to get Katie Holme’s recent cashmere bra look that the Internet still hasn’t recovered from. Then there were leather garder belts and harnesses that managed to look elegant when paired with turtleneck dresses and tailored blazers. It was a reminder that even the most simple and classic of pieces can feel exciting with the right details, styling, and accessories. —Lauren Alexis Fisher

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs looked to none other than his own designs as reference for Spring 2020: those he showed 18 years ago on the night before 9/11 on Pier 54 in NYC. His show in 2019 took place at the Park Avenue Armory, “This show, like that show (2001) is a celebration of life, joy, equality, individuality, optimism, happiness, indulgence, dreams…” read the show notes. So let’s go back in time to a post-90s moment of exuberance. There were feathers and sequins on Kaia Gerber, Gigi and Bella Hadid, as well as bold suits, hats, flower embossed coats, tweedy jackets. In other words a hodgepodge of fashion as frivolity with a nod to icons past like Anita Pallenberg and Lee Radziwill. It sure is a good time, but does it align with our time? —Kerry Pieri

Gabriela Hearst

Gabriela Hearst put on fashion’s first carbon neutral show—even the models walked with wet hair to avoid the electricity from hair dryers. But the power came from referencing powerhouse ladies both real and mythic—Josephine Baker, the goddess Athena, female Kurdish fighters, and Maria Sibylla Merian, the German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator. The artisan-crafted pieces on the runway take minimal, streamlined ideas to special places—netting falling off of a black gown, a white coat with fringe, suits with slit trousers, an agate belt—that something cool and different that allows a woman stand out without allowing the clothes to wear her. —Kerry Pieri

Oscar de la Renta

For spring, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia took the Oscar woman on a getaway to Mr. De la Renta’s native Dominican Republic. With floor-sweeping caftans, elegant dresses, and a myriad of print and color, it was just as glamorous of a vacation as one could expect. A series of new patchwork floral prints and crochet cocktail dresses felt like fresh territory for the storied fashion house, but Kim and Garcia stuck to Oscar’s classics as well. Much like the feathered gown that stole the show last season, a series of dramatic high-low gowns closed out the runway—done in white, black, and Oscar’s signature red. —Lauren Alexis Fisher

Tom Ford

During a week of Ubers, Lyfts, and car services, Tom Ford actually managed to get the fashion set to trek down to the subway platform. The designer and newly-appointed CFDA president staged his Spring 2020 show in an abandoned subway station (Bowery, to be exact). And as only Tom Ford himself could, he managed to make the old public transportation stop both glamorous and cool (will take notes for my morning commute). Mirroring the venue, the collection itself was a (slight) foray into streetwear for Ford. While there were still ball gown skirts and tailored suiting, gym shorts, baseball caps, and leather moto jackets also made their way into the mix. The collection ended with a series of molded metal crop tops and bras—if you needed another indication that the Tom Ford woman is getting tough (and maybe even riding the subway) next spring. —Lauren Alexis Fisher
