One of the things that held me back from pursuing my dreams for many years was fear of failure … and the lack of self-confidence that I needed to overcome that fear. Once I’ve realized that, I started working on my self-confidence and self-esteem. Without really thinking of it in those terms, that’s what I’ve been doing over the last years, and that’s what helped me finally overcome my fears, and finally pursue my dreams. I still have those fears, undoubtedly. I still experience a low self-confidence from time to time. But now I know that I can beat that feeling, that I can break through that wall of fear and come out on the other side. I’ve done it many times now, and that success will fuel further success. The lack of self-confidence is something that we all faced in our past days, and even now, some of you still have to deal with it. That’s why I’ve decided to write for you this article on how to be confident.
If you are low in self-confidence, I strongly believe that you can do some things to increase your self-confidence. It is not genetic, and you do not have to be reliant on others or external materialistic stuff to increase your self-confidence. But taking concrete actions that improve your competence and your self-image will definitely change the way you think about yourself and increase that self-confidence. For example, try to groom yourself, dress nicely, wear makeup, do your hair, get your nails done…Those little things may seem a little obvious to you, but they can completely change everything.
Your body can actually tell to people whether you feel confident or not. So try to eye contact more people when you out, look into their eyes if you are speaking to them (but don’t stare too much, that’s creepy lol). If you have a horrible posture, remind yourself to stand tall and straight. Learn how to use an open body language and open gestures when talking to people. Also, speaking slowly will make you feel more confident. Of course, don’t take it to an extreme, but just don’t sound rushed either.
You have to learn to be aware of your self-talk, the thoughts you have about yourself and what you’re doing. If you’re always saying to yourself “I’m not beautiful”, “I’m stupid”, “I’m weak”.., you’re only feeding your mind and your soul with the things that you don’t want to be. Try to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Practice positive affirmations every day in front of your mirror, meditate and visualize yourself being that confident person you want to be. And as soon as you’ll learn to recognize this negative self-talk, try to learn this trick that will change everything in your life: Every time a negative thought come across your mind, say out loud “STOP”. And immediately replace it with a positive one. (“C’mon, I can do this! I got this! I am strong! I am confident…)
Find what you are passionate about, set yourself some goals and do everything you can to get there. Start by small goals, something that is easy to achieve, then achieve it. And then set another goal and achieve, etc…The more you achieve your goals, the better you’ll be at it, and the better you’ll feel. Working on your dreams is an achievement that will bring you fulfillment and boost your self-confidence.
The quickest way to gain self-confidence is by doing the things that you are afraid of. It is certain that your accomplishments will make you confident but the obstacles you overcame to achieve you goals will make you even more surely confident. Face your fear of failure: Self-confidence doesn’t come from always winning, it comes from knowing that if you fail, you’re going to be okay. It’s not that big of a deal, you can handle embarrassment, fear, and strong emotions. Facing your fears and taking action will help build your core level of self-confidence. The most successful people, follow the cliché, ‘feel the fear and do it anyway,’ because they have core confidence underneath their fear. So don’t let fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of criticism,… paralyze you. Face your fears. Act. Build you self-confidence. Succeed.
By the way, what’s your fear? Please leave a comment sharing your personal stories of triumphing over your fears. We will all learn from them and be inspired by them. As always, thanks for reading – and commenting.
