5 Ways to Travel the World Without Leaving Home

One of the side-effects of the current situation is that most of us will be stuck at home for a while.  So, as we stay put, how do you channel your wanderlust without being able to travel anywhere?  I’ve come up with some ideas for how to travel the world without leaving home, bring the outside world in! Let’s get through self-isolation and keep dreaming of travel! Here are 5 ways to travel the world without leaving home!

1. Take a Virtual Museum Tour

Lots of museums around the world have closed their doors during the lockdown, and while no-one is allowed to visit in person, a lot of museums offer virtual tours so you can explore the exhibits and travel without leaving the house!  Such as the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the British Museum in London and Le Louvre in Paris. You can watch these virtual tours on their official websites or you can watch a 360° virtual tour of these museums on Youtube!

2. Watch YouTube travel videos

4K resolution, 360 cameras, underwater shots – modern filming gear allows you to see the world in the highest definition possible and in any angles! Of course, it will never be better than seeing our stunning planet in real life but, trust me, it’s getting pretty close. On youtube, there are SO MANY travel videos and travel vlogs – they will last you your entire self-isolation time! YouTube travel channels today have really good quality, lots of interesting facts about local cultures and useful tips for when you’ll be able to travel again. One of my favorite Youtube Travel channel is Renata Pereira! She went literally everywhere around the world; plus her editing is so good that it will feel like you are visiting those places in real life.

3. Read travel books.

This is, honestly, THE BEST way to explore the world without leaving your home! Be it someone’s memoirs, beautiful coffee table book or a fiction story set in a stunning location, travel books are always so inspiring. Whenever I’m at the library, I always grab at least one travel book – they never disappoint! ‘The lost girls: three friends, four continents, one unconventional detour around the world‘, for example, is a hilarious book by NYC besties who left their jobs to travel the world together for a year. It’s so emotional, funny and honest – loved reading it! ‘My Paris dream: an education in style, slang, and seduction in the great city on the Seine‘ is a story of American editor who went to live and work in Paris and made it her life goal to become ‘true Parisian’. She writes about Paris, its culture and its street with so much love and passion – so easy to imagine you’re right there right now yourself.

4. Cook exotic dishes

Risotto, Paella, Sushi. Avid travelers often repeat that eating local food is the best way to learn more about the country and local culture. But why wait until the next trip when all the recipes are now available online? Tacos, pho, tom yum, pizza – you can make that all at home! Or get it delivered to you if you’re not much of a Masterchef. You still can watch videos on youtube and always learn a new dish!

5. Travel The World by Watching Travel Documentaries

Real-life documentaries showcase the incredible talents of film-makers who record life in different parts of the world.  I love nature documentaries, like Blue Planet, which has some mind-blowing footage. You can find these documentaries on TV like the famous Nat Geo or even Youtube!!
